Russell Edmonds Carter, Sr. graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1951. He was an exemplary student athlete in track (serving as captain in his senior year) as well as football. In 2007, he was inducted into the Lower Merion Football Hall of Fame; in 2018, he was inducted into the Track Hall of Fame. After graduation, Mr. Carter enlisted in the United States Navy to serve during the Korean War. After Navy Boot Camp, he completed the remainder of his four-year enlistment with the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Carter was employed by American Food Service for 20 years and retired in 1994. He was also a member of the Leon Spencer Reid Post #547 and served as Commander for 20 of his 35-year tenure. Mr. Carter’s family established this award in his name following his death, to help future Lower Merion graduates achieve their lifelong dreams.
