Kenneth C. Trotter Special Award to be given in 2018

The Scholarship Fund is proud to be giving a Special Award in honor of the late Mr. Kenneth Trotter, a beloved teacher in the Lower Merion School District for 37 years.  Mr. Trotter taught at Ardmore Junior High School from 1956 until the school’s permanent closing in 1978, after which he devoted the remaining years of his service to schools where he himself had studied, first at Bala Cynwyd Middle School from 1978 to 1981 and then at Lower Merion High School, where he taught from 1981 until his retirement in 1993.

Over the course of his career as an educator, Mr. Trotter taught a broad array of subjects that included mathematics, German, history, English, world cultures, and Russian, which he introduced as an extracurricular academic activity at Ardmore in 1957, marking the first time that the language was taught at the secondary level in the Delaware Valley. Throughout most of his tenure at Ardmore, Mr. Trotter was a common sight at the school long after classes had ended for the day, either on the athletic field, where he served as coach of the boys’ track team in the 1960s and 1970s, or in the school auditorium as he guided students through rehearsals  for the original spring musicals (including “First Place,” “Competition,” “Rancho de l’Amour,” and others) that he co-wrote over the course of many years. A talented musician, performer, and actor himself, he frequently performed in local theater companies and musical ensembles. Mr. Trotter was a remarkable teacher who had a lasting influence on his students, fellow teachers, and the Lower Merion Community.

Mr. Trotter’s family has requested that donations be made in his name to the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund. Please consider honoring Mr. Trotter’s legacy of helping the youth of Lower Merion achieve their dreams of higher education.
